The only question in my head about it is, what for? Tripod weapons themselves were conceptualized and developed for the sole reason to give multi-crew ships a fighting chance against piloted fighters - to give additional crew members something practically useful, where turret-mounted weapons have not been able to offer the tracking capacity to defend against fighter craft. The fact that you can use one with the mouse controls and land hits on the moving targets is a saving grace of those weapons after some arguably reasonable balance passes.
Why would you want to use them as your main ship weapons when you have the access to much more powerful analogs? Size? Why would that be a consideration where it's not that difficult to protect a weapon with armor, aside from the idea of plainly spamming a lot of those weapons to exploit that feature? And if that is the idea, why would you want developers to dedicate their time introducing a way to exploit something, that would require further balancing as a consequence, instead of just not doing it at all?
