Panelling that is thin, lightweight and cheap compared to the 'minimum 12cm thick' 'armor' that is currently avaliable.

Most auto body skin is ~1 to 1.5mm thick or so.

Not sure what the purpose of this would be?

If it's cosmetics you're after.
Wouldn't it be simpler to paint directly on the plates instead, with a paint brush?

Im just after a way to reduce weight/cost of ships while still having skin instead of exposed frame.

They're made of 1x1cm voxels. 12x12 is just smallest common denominator for most parts.
