Will asteroid bases be possible?

In an early starbase video, we saw an endo hollow out a small asteroid and bolt things inside it to use as a small hidden "base."
My question, will there be asteroids large enough to create sizable asteroid bases?
Will it be possible to build into/onto these asteroids?
Will the game engine even support a combined asteroid (naturally generated) and player built construction?

Obviously such a base would not be even remotely the same size as a constructed station, but it could have use as a hidden base, small outposts or storage that's effectively pre armoured by the asteroid.

Even if building structure directly attached to asteroids weren't possible it surely would be doable to drill inside one of these larger ones and build a relatively sizeable outpost for refueling, patrolling, or pillaging nearby mining vessel- what? I didn't say that.

What'd be really funny to see is whether or not the physics engine would simulate 'spin gravity' on the inside of a rotating asteroid station. That has some nifty implications if it does, since then you could use the rotation of the asteroid to fling ships out and away without having to rely on malfunctioning Endos trying to negotiate a launch tunnel.

Probably just a nifty little pipe dream, but it'd be cool to see. If nothing else a well-built space shack housed in even a middling asteroid would be quite well defended. Has anybody shot an asteroid with weapons to see how they hold up?

Well, sometimes they get affected, sometimes they dont. I would say, it's not yet ready to implicate, but it would totally be possible.
