So a recent addition is to scan the composition of asteroids and objects with the universal tool to check what it's made of, making mining and building using the repair tool easier.
A suggested module then is a composition scanner that works the same way, but as a ship module.
Use the same design as a range finder, a laser that goes out from a module, and gives the composition of the first object it encounters.
Obviously it should have a limited range, something like 50m or less, so that you still have to get close to an object to scan it.
The idea for use is that it would make mining that little bit easier, while ultimately not adding many new mechanics as it is using the same system as the universal tool.
A mining or surveying ship can simply get close to an asteroid, point the laser at it, and get a composition reading rather than getting out and going over to the asteroid every time.
And I'm sure some smart cookie out there could probably make a ship scanner or something for evaluating what wrecks are worth salvaging or something like that.
