So the idea would be like this...say your out roaming around for stuff. A randomly generated event can happen in a remote area like a capital ship/big boy ship just slams into a asteroid and you have a short time limit to catch up to it, board it, scavenge parts before the reactor melts down or it slams into the planet.
A comet comes hurling into your area and you have to catch up with it to mine it before it falls into the planet/leaves area...think bruce willis' Armageddon but instead of saving the world, you line your pockets.
Wormholes? Similar to how eve online does it but inside would be a secluded instance of space that can only be entered through one point with shipwrecks and treasure. Think of how treasure caves work in traditional MMORPGs.
A station defense event where a rogue asteroid has been mounted with engines/point defense turrets where you would have to coordinate with other players to attack and mine into the heart of the big rock to mount explosives, failure would effect station economy and looks. (Just got done re watching the Expanse, final season had those asteroid drops as planetary assault weapons)
