It is like that for technical and gameplay reasons. Do you know how frustrating it would be to players if anything you knock around just fly off and be lost forever? It would make any kind of salvaging or building in space impossible. Same would apply to ships if you end up leaving them and they just fly to nowhere leaving you stranded. Lastly, the game would bug down a lot keeping track of objects moving around, especially if said objects are just lost, never to be found by players again.

Friction could be toned down a bit for sure, but it needs to remain to keep it playable for most players.

Well, building is possible in KSP, so...
KSP is very different to this game.

Firstly KSP does get slow if you add to many objects.

Secondly this game is not on your local computer its on a servers. These servers do not maintain only your lost or misplaced ship they do it for every user that has ever been on the game. it tracks items as large as a bolt so you can imagine how quickly these objects grows.

Coming back to the topic I agree with the post creator it would be nice having the realism. The tracking just makes this improbable further more it would add complexity to a complex game. Then the biggest issue with making it more realistic by conserving motion is catching up to these objects or getting hit by them will be horrible, not to mention the fact that this is a rabbit whole leading to orbit maintaining increasing this to a whole next level of crazy.
