    For ease of development, couldn't the current thrusters be used but have different component variations that provide different amounts of thrust, effectively filling many roles in the same form-factor. Maybe you could have really expensive parts that push way harder than their cheaper...

    mods and workshop creations

    I could see there being sound mods that change or "improve" the game sounds to fit a player's desires, maybe they want the lasers to sound like star wars blasters? As long as the mods don't give any advantages (so only audio/visual) then I could see there being a small market for it.

    I think there are some good ideas in here. I like the idea of modular thrusters (we do already have that with the plasma thrusters), and the search for solutions that don't limit creativity. However, I'm worried that this approach is more of a band-aid than a solution for the underlying issue...

    So far, I'd say that only ships smaller than capital ships will be viable. There may be some capital ships as flagships just to show the power of factions, but they wouldn't really be used for combat. Being small or just a fighter with oodles of armor seems to be most effective right now. Maybe...
