Due to lack of any security modules in the game, I am afraid that ships even the size of a corvette may be impractical. Since all you really need to defeat a ship of that size is not a larger ship, but actually, just attaching a pod to a ram and rocket. And using that "assault pod" as a battering ram to get inside the ship, kill the crew member(s), and decide on the fate of the vessel (scrap, use it, etc). Heck, you don't even need to use a pod. You can jump out of a fighter and use it as missile to punch a hole through a larger ship and get in that way. it would suck if large ships couldn't be practical in space warfare. since, you know, they are kind of essential to it.
which is why its important that (hopefully) the devs add AI controlled defenses. such as sentry turrets that can be put on floors, walls, and roofs of a ship. or, the devs could add traps that don't include strapping armed missiles to your ship (Tesla stuff that can short endo's or lasers that can be triggered like in spy/heist movies). Not only would they make large ships be practical in space warfare, it would give them in an edge in some ways.
When it comes to fighter combat, you can still survive even if your ship is gone. And can even still put up a fight by trying to "grapple" onto enemy fighters and shooting at their glass cockpit. However things could be different for larger ships. Say, a small cruiser engaged a small company of fighters, and "won". However, some of the pilots of those fighters survived the fight and boarded the cruiser. Now, without the previously mentioned security, the crew of the cruiser would probably have hard fight ahead of them. But with that security the crew would have a very good chance of winning. Not only do they know the layout of the ship, they know where the defenses are. and can get in a position where they have not only the guns in their hands, but the support of sentry's and traps.
