Ships being loaded in instead of having to face LOD's in fights have been an interesting change, and the more detailed LOD's are much nicer too, however it's been pretty hit and miss.
Performance during battles is important, and battles with the new LOD changes have been very inconsistant, ranging from totally fine, to random teleporting, invisible entities, fps lag, fps stutter, loss of ship controls...
I've done a fair few fights with ships fully loaded in now and I've got to say it's so different from fighting in LODs, because the damage is done and translated 100% correctly, all this time LOD's had a fair inaccuracy with damage translation and it's been totally under the radar until non-LOD fights have become a thing.
Unfortunately having ships load-in can offer very inconsistent performance effects as described above. For example, a recent fight involved a semi-large fighter that was coming in-and-out of LOD every time it got to the furthest point of a joust, and each time my ships controls completely froze for a solid 1-2 seconds. so it happened like every 10 seconds.
The new LOD's are much nicer to look at, you could consider just going back to the old system of fighting ships in LOD state only, however you kind of need to pick one or the other, you can't really have LOD's be a choice, because choosing to render ships as LOD's in a fight will reduce your effectiveness of dealing damage.
Another option is to work on optimizing the process of ships being loaded in, so it doesn't cause these random performance issues.
