So, the idea of a transponder is to make a ship visible and identifiable from long range.
If a system could be set up where detection of transponders is directional (ie. A sensor is set up and linked to a display to show a list of transponders, but to only detect/list transponders within a specific arc in front of them), then you could make a system that shows what direction transponders are in.
I'm imagining a ship or tower with sensors built around it to provide coverage in all directions, with each sensor linked to a display based on the direction it's facing.
The more sensors, the more precise the directional information.
Possibility to link system with rangefinders for distance info as well, but that depends on the limits of rangefinders.
