So, I wanted to make a thread about this because it’s always bothered me. I’ve heard rumors of dev plans to counter meta, but wasn’t sure, and I’m hoping to see a developer comment in this chat about this issue..
I want to ask people who get involved in this topic, in this thread to stay specifically on topic of weapons, armor, and speed. Ssc heresy is another issue people are currently talking about in their thread. Let’s also stay respectful.
So, when it comes down to what makes an effective ship in this game, you have 3 categories. Speed, firepower, and armor. Followed by just redundant wiring, cabling/ ducting. A little back story on me..just like the everyone else, I saw the trailers to this game and became overwhelmed with excitement. Ville did a damn fine job making the faction ships in this game. It’s hard to make something nice, but he did it multiple times, and even made everything look like it belonged in the same universe on a particular faction, as if he used some sort of motiff idea. I realized later I was really naive to think the community would reflect ville’s classiness. I saw fighter ships with a couple of main thrusters, and a set of about two weapons. Didn’t imagine later that those builds would be worse than horrible verses practically any pvp ship in the game today. And I hate that with a burning passion.. it totally killed that vibe for me. I’m pretty sure the min maxers would fly vulgar toys found in certain adult stores if it meant winning.
Anyway.. so speed is an issue because all ships stack thrusters to oblivion so that everyone can reach max speed. So no one really has an advantage here. This is where small ships usually shine in space themes. But not here. And with that, people can stack weapons and armor to oblivion to achieve all 3 goals in making a meta ship. I personally believe big ships should be slow, and never keep up with fighters. I classify a fighter that’s the size of a knight or spatha. I’m using a context that was created by Ville, a dev responsible for making the coolest looking ships in this game that we see in the trailers. Anything bigger than a spatha or a knight, to me, is a gun ship, freighter, mining freighter, corvette/ frigate, or capital ship. That’s just how I personally classify them. I’ve seen builds of each of these. No one flies fighters. Not in pvp. And I hate that. You simply cannot fly a spatha or a knight and be competitive. I like small fighters. But speed is easily matched by bigger ships carrying 6+ weapons shaped like a brick, that say stuff like “get rekt noob” on the front of it. lol I mean it’s a joke. Everything is so min maxed. And that is never fun. At least, not to me. I like pvp. I love it. But I also like to do it with some class in a game like this. I guess there can be many ways to combat this. Like what if we had armors that were strong in certain areas? Like plates that are good vs heat, so lasers have a hard time penetrating it, but yet, it’s low density, so auto cannon fire would shred it. This material would be perfect for a highly agile small ship to kite its enemies when it’s being shot at by lasers, which are a better option for long range constant fire. Metals like, omnium can just be all around good vs anything. But extremely heavy. So something bigger ships would want to use. What if angles had a mechanic where there is a small chance of a ricochet, as opposed to a flat surface? Doesn’t have to be every shot of course, or even 50 percent. But a chance..
If the max speed can’t be barred against the big ships, I think acceleration should be a huge difference based on weight. Think of a car next to a semi, or dump truck when the light turns green. As far as weapons especially the rail cannon, and plasma, adding recoil would be cool. So that when the ship fires, unless it’s heavy (and can’t reach max speed) the ship is thrown back and off to an angle based on where the weapon is located vs the center of mass, and momentum of the ship. Then armor can have strengths and weaknesses to fit an ideal class as well. I just want to see some class, and I’d personally be totally fine if the devs implemented things in game that didn’t even make sense just for the sake of separating class, like stacking plates, especially of the same material has diminishing returns… just a random example . Where people have a ship that makes sense for the play style. What do yall think? And if any devs read, would love to hear your thoughts, and even plans to combat this tasteless meta we see often.
