Ive been thinking about this for a while, its a distant possibility, but the implementation for warp drives on capital ships is cool, what about changing that idea to a high speed drive for smaller ships with a few sensible changes.
For example: The high speed drive (Not called a warp drive for reasons) cannot send you to a location instantly but rather allow you to travel in a straight line at extremely high speeds towards a location. (Maybe 1000 ms or more instead of ship max speed of 150 ms) due to this, its recharge time is significantly faster but requires at leasts 2 personal fuel rods for operation more than 30 minutes, but can also be connected to batteries for better operation, of course, its not conventional control and requires a tier 3 yolol chip that additionally requires you to put in a wanted distance to travel manually each time but can be automated to travel an indefinite distance at the push of a button until it is out of energy or the device is turned off, of course with penalties for this lazy method such as the computer slot shorting out due to being constantly overridden and requiring replacement or expensive field repairs in order to operate again.

Ya know... if it ate fuel rods completely per use, I think that would be a good balancer. Then you really have to weigh the option of its use.

So only hard working players could buy the fuel rod capacity required to keep it going

No. Fuel rods are pretty cheap. High power draw would be a likely alternative, but eating a set number of rods no matter how far you go would be a bit easier to deal with.
