Why are empire and kingdom at each others throats

wait I'm pretty sure there's some actual lore. I think it's something like Empire is an Empire and Kingdom is more diplomatic or something and they are fighting each other for control. I'm 60% sure I'm missing something though.

I thought it was going to be something like empire or kingdom both believe that the other had taken something from them, land, a convoy, technology or something more complex like under the table deals or being straight annoying, causing a member to blow and attack, creating a snowball effect where they are now going to the ends of the universe to take the other down.

The Kingdom rebelled from the Empire. They're now mad at each other because the Empire surprise attacked a Kingdom station.
