So if you stop grinding, does the armor value reset to full, or retain it's grinded down value

Do the voxels/panels/objects that the mining saw interacts with have some kind of persistent health that is depleted? Or is it some kind of timer that it has to be held down on the voxels/panels/objects based on the material until it breaks? Just curious what the mechanic is from a programming...
