If mechs do become more integrated into the starbase community then ships would be designed for carrying mechs or they could be used to steal cargo with more efficiency
How so? You could just steal the whole ship by slicing it up and grabbing it with some tractor beams and cargo lock beams.
And if you can't do that, you can always just use a resource bridge to transfer over any small cargo once you have access to the controls. Using a cargo lock frame for anything too big, cargo lock beams would still work too.

Mechs are really cool for science fiction, but they are just impractical if you actually try to find a way to use them.

So their whole job is stealing cargo? better idea: Use a big arrange of cannons to blow a big hole in the side of a transporter and move out the cargo with small heavy duty ships. More efficient than any mech could ever be. From a balancing standpoint it makes no sense to implement mechs, cuz they will either be able to do everything worse, than ships filling their role or they would become the new meta of everything and nobody would ever use the ship building tool for anything but designing mech carriers.

It would be nice if the moons where hollow and made it were the players had to use mech and land tanks to operate in the open caverns in the moon. This would give players a reason to use lights to find rare ores or each. Players can make bases inside the moon with entrances scattered all over.
