    When will the Dreadnoughts come?

Practical size limit places the largest ships built so far in the corvette classification, which goes up to around 128m and abuts the typical lengths of frigates, destroyers begin somewhere around 160m. Given parts counts expand geometrically as length increases, breaking into anything near...

Practicality vs. Coolness. Where do you stand?

Anyone who says tanks aren't cool or beautiful doesn't understand the attractiveness of heavy machinery. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and function is its own form at times. Given the needs between speed, structure, combat profile, and visibility, there are multiple interdependent...

Crisis of Conflict: Is there a reason to go to war in Starbase?

More importantly, Starbase currently promises no extrinsic reward, all accomplishments are highly intrinsic especially wealth or materiel accumulation which always hold natural value (or rather they are highly extrinsic valuables based on their promised intrinsic utility). Ultimately, the...

Ship types and symbols (types are not classes)

I like it, Calen, saving a copy of that for myself, not sure if I'd use a class marker for bikes, though, they kind of fall below the size limit for consideration in my book. I probably picked it up from star wars, always taken it to mean very compact one-man fighters especially those with very...

Ship types and symbols (types are not classes)

What CalenLoki said, I'd design it more as a series of hull classifications (i.e. general hull size) and then modify each of those core symbols with role markers, this seems like a fun sideboard topic so I'll see if I can work something up in paint. ED: Here's a start plus all the pieces I've...

    Laser-guided torpedo occlusion

Interesting idea but it's only a viable defense tactic if the lasing ship isn't also the torpedo boat or the torpedoes use some sort of VLS arrangement and the armor's texturing can swallow the beam with a severe pocket or angle.

Crisis of Conflict: Is there a reason to go to war in Starbase?

Nominally, wars, I expect, will be either petty spats between opposing leadership groups or scuffles between the lower ranks because they're bored and a quick raid on the enemy shipyard might be fun (it also happens to be a good way to gather intel on enemy machines and fighting strength). Like...

Crisis of Conflict: Is there a reason to go to war in Starbase?

Hopefully the evolving engineering meta behind ships and an advancing understanding and implementation of yolol widgets keep the wider theatre of war lively and fairly interesting, but yeah, if your systems and gear stagnante there's only so much enjoyment that can be had in war before it...

Ship Despawn: Dynamic Ship Graveyards, A Thinkpiece Suggestion on Creating Exploration Opportunities

Given that, in general, wrecks despawn within 1-7 days and some wrecks are said to not despawn if they're big enough, perhaps a mechanic could be devised that causes any surviving wreckage in an area (several dozen km) to slowly coalesce into a larger cloud of debris when players aren't around...

    Discussing Exploration

Given the scale of the play zone and the ambitions of some factions, expansion pressures and territory scuffles could cause abandoned stations naturally, especially once the warp gate system is developed and implemented, I could see stations being mostly abandoned as new hyperlanes are set up...

Black Market: Fake Transponder Codes, Spoofing Software, & ATAC Verification Systems

P.S. I've just come to the startling realisation that outside of creating new items specifically to do illegal things, there's nothing in the game at the moment to provide for the creation of an actual black market or contraband to buy and sell on it. The closest examples are weapons or...

Black Market: Fake Transponder Codes, Spoofing Software, & ATAC Verification Systems

Black Market Item (implies enforcement jobs can interact with object states or some kind of contraband database): Fake Transponder Code; comes in three varieties 1) Junk Codes that grant all the benefits of an active transponder but show up on [some kind of scanner] as bad codes and read...

Crisis of Conflict: Is there a reason to go to war in Starbase?

depopulating the belt will be tough, just going by the 10 years for 1% mined metric, the safezone itself will take multiple years to scratch and without knowing the size and distribution of rare resource nodes, you won't really know where to look unless the nodes are fairly large (i.e. months of...

Weapon Expansion, a few ideas for more anti-ship weapons.

The beam lasers, either version, would just try to use the same mechanic as the mining laser, the light version especially would mostly be a long-range version, so to balance I came up with the damage reduction mechanic to mimic beam dispersion, the balance would likely be a power and/or...

Weapon Expansion, a few ideas for more anti-ship weapons.

A selection of weapon concepts that are intended to be slightly less optimal than the current core roster of ship-to-ship weapons while providing interesting trade-offs. Light Mount (Light) Beam Laser/Continuous Beam Laser: longer range and projectile speed than the laser cannon, but even lower...

    Passive/Unpowered Docking (Carrier Ships)

rail movers can exit a rail by running off an open end, as shown in one of the latest boltcrackers vids, so we can at least perform a fighter launch system, and I think tractors enable snapping for the objects they've caught, so... high-tech loading crane, I guess

    Passive/Unpowered Docking (Carrier Ships)

depending on how stable rail movers are under force, and whether they can snap to rails by proximity, this is basically how they would operate if a specialised docking clamp were implemented. the big issue is attractive or landing forces jarring superstructure on either end, so it'd be better to...

    Ship Size limits?

IIRC, the only reason SE separated large and small grids is that when you use small parts on a large grid, which at least one mod enables, the increased number of connection points makes the structure massively more durable because of how damage is modeled on SE's cubes.
