  1. A take on energy shields - say no to bubbles

That is not what I typed. Time for an English lesson. The phrase "energy shields are no more or less grounded in reality than special plating that somehow becomes more durable with a charge is passed through it." states that there is an equivalent level of realism to these two theoretical...
  2. Infantry Combat

I'd really like some dedicated antipersonnel defensive weapons. Since we have rockets I'd like to see some EMP launcher or lightning gun designed around dealing damage to EXOs without damaging surrounding systems. It'd be harder to use, probably less damage or range or whatever, but it would be...
  3. A take on energy shields - say no to bubbles

I mean if you wanna nitpick realism, energy shields are no more or less grounded in reality than special plating that somehow becomes more durable with a charge is passed through it. Realism isn't a useful concept when discussing game mechanics in a general sense unless you're making a...
  4. Saltberia "Prison"

I loved the archeage justice system. Nothing like creating a cabal of corrupt jurors that places all of your friends above the law. We once sent three people to prison for being unfortunate enough to let me jump in front of their swords. I had that mob camp to myself for an hour. It was the...
  5. A take on energy shields - say no to bubbles

Not really a fan of shields as a concept in a game like this. Fb's stated intent is that ships are "easy to diasable hard to destroy" which should roughly translate to "armor is quite durable and modules much less so" One of the things that makes building sims engaging is the little oopsies and...
  6. Infantry Combat

All damage values you see right now are temporary for testing purposes. Ships are way flimsier than they're supposed to be to test performance of fracturing and destruction, handheld weapons haven't been fine tuned due to a lack of need to do so. They're relying on the closed tests to start...
  7. Boltcrackers Episode 7: Boarding Countermeasures

I proposed a system in a thread that summed up is basically a personal spawning pod that must be YOLOL keyed to its owner through a registry. That pod is used ONLY to respawn the player to whom it is assigned. The YOLOl registry, being a YOLOL device, can be tampered effectively allowing an "end...
  8. If YOLOL chips are runned client side. Wont everyone see something different in big faction factory cause multiple people will work on it?

"Log out and quit" -Standard logout "Log out to sleep mode" - Logs out of sim, shuts down GUI window, logs out character, leaves sim handler online with a simple VB login UI It could work.
  9. Developer run events

Its about what actually happens when you encounter the AI moreso than the AI intruding. When the AI is basically a little buzzing fly that shows up way too often its irritating. Its not irritating because you got stopped. It's irritating because you got stopped for an unsatisfactory experience...
  10. Developer run events

NPCs as fodder are why people hate NPCs. They're just more annoying asteroids. They don't really add much to the world and in most cases feel tacked on and rather pointless aside from whatever shinies the developer gives them to justify their existence. The don't really do anything to remedy the...
  11. Limited Sandbox Discussion

Your asteroid hauler flies straight, but you'll need to pick up some rocks to see if the theory matches reality. Your combat ship might fly but does it turn fast enough to track targets? At some point the proverbial rubber has to hit the road and I think making that point be in world in stead of...
  12. If YOLOL chips are runned client side. Wont everyone see something different in big faction factory cause multiple people will work on it?

Right. My point is that the Starbase model isn't inherently more vulnerable to hacking than most other online games as a result of utilizing clients to help run the sim. There's always going to be an arms race between cheaters and developers and that's never going to change.
  13. Limited Sandbox Discussion

To be completely honest I have no strong feelings one way or the other. I was merely weighing in on the flaws in the economic arguments presented. I'd happily use either model, but can see real merits both ways. It was never going to make or break the sandbox either way, just influence the...
  14. Limited Sandbox Discussion

Perhaps you should shy away from using hyperbolic and divisive rhetoric like "tyranny of the vocal" in the future. That was the moment this thread transitioned from reasonable discussion to flamebait. This, your statement, was a clearly intended implication backed by the appearance of authority...
  15. If YOLOL chips are runned client side. Wont everyone see something different in big faction factory cause multiple people will work on it?

That's not entirely true. You don't need to model a simulation to check its validity. Much of the time automated checks are used to provide leads to a small number of GMs, flagging them for direct observation. Once you ban the first round of accounts word gets around and that exploit tends to...
  16. Will bounty hunting be a thing and what will it look like?

I understand that. I don't understand the point of creating a document that's literally just a bunch of random people's random takes, and literally zero of them have ever played the game. None of these are authoritative statements by anyone important. They're just the same uninfomed assumptions...
  17. Limited Sandbox Discussion

I find it concerning that a person in charge of moderating discussion and quality controlling the content of forum posts both can't be bothered to "wade through" the forums, and directly demonizes members of said same forum because they have a difference of opinion. Discussion isn't "tyranny"...
  18. Limited Sandbox Discussion

I agree, but I still fail to see how that justifies cutting the grind at the point of ship design rather than easing the grind at the point of resource acquisition. You're saying "tedium bad" but treating one activity as sacrosanct for no logical reason. Clearly its already an extremely...
  19. Limited Sandbox Discussion

I mean lets get real here. What's the content of the game or indeed most sandbox games? Acquire resources>build equipment>use equipment to more efficiently or safley acquire resources>repeat That's the central model for every sandbox MMO with player harvesting mechanics. Its a staple of the...
  20. Limited Sandbox Discussion

Firstly, no, ships don'rt actually blow up that fast. FB has stated that the current destruction values you see in footage are placeholders to test destruction physics and their mantra for the final version of damage is "easy to disable, hard to destroy" Based on the footage I have seen this...
