Well, I really dislike this idea because the safe zone is big enough already as it is (~10,000,000 cubic kilometers, at least a third of it intersecting with the belt) so there is not really a need to cater to players in terms of safety even more.

The reason why practically no game I ever played featured lengthy stays in a prison environment is because I would simply tell the whole game "so long, suckers." and be off to play another game. It is preposterous to assume that people would actually serve their time.

I like this whole suggestion bar one flaw. If the safe zone is larger than, say 500-1000 meters, attacking forces would be able to mass up inside the safe zone until they could basically zerg rush the defending faction making it unsustainable to defend the gate because there is no way to prevent...

I wouldn't rely on it. If this game is ever supposed to be logical, the logical answer is that this is indeed a bug. But who knows, maybe converting infra-red light may be enough to power a whole station :sneaky:
